Sara Baras dares to reinterpret the myth of Carmen in a free adaptation and using a new and categorical language, in a show directed, choreographed and starred by herself.
Baras’ Carmen is a tragedy transformed into flamenco. The show owes its magic to gestures and dancing, the expressive essence of flamenco. Along with her Flamenco Ballet, the dancer from Cadiz works with the character from an abstract and poetic point of view, that keeps the mystery alive and leaves interpretation to the audience’s imagination. As a result, through a hymn to women’s freedom, Baras interprets Carmen as someone that is sweet, intense and full of subtleties; someone contemporary and rational, that doesn’t get carried away by desire. She presents this feminine figure as an independent character, attractive by itself because of the modernity of its passions and the freedom of its decisions.
Conceived as a three-act show, this Carmen is a journey through the different aspects of flamenco interpreted by the whole Ballet. It includes songs by Paco de Lucía (music created for the cinematographic version of Carmen, by Carlos Saura); Joan Valent pieces, who has remade Bizet’s famous Habanera, or a “sevillana” composed by the musician Javier Ruibal. Sara Baras herself has actively participated in the costume design alongside the designer Sybilla.
